Measuring the Impact of Donations Effectively

First responders run toward the moments the rest of us run from. That work leaves a mark, and it shows up in the numbers far more than most people realize.

By the Numbers

According to a 2018 SAMHSA research bulletin, roughly 30% of first responders develop behavioral health conditions like depression or PTSD, compared to 20% in the general population. Among fire and EMS professionals specifically, 37% report having contemplated suicide, nearly ten times the rate of the average American adult. Law enforcement fares no better: the Badge of Life's national data estimates between 125 and 300 police officer suicides occur every year in the U.S.

Why It Hits Differently

Repeated exposure to trauma, disrupted sleep, and a job culture that often discourages talking about it all compound over a career. SAMHSA's research also points to a quieter problem: many first responders who experience a traumatic event never report it to their agency, and structural barriers, cost, time off, access, keep plenty of people from getting help even when they want it.

What Actually Helps

The same research is clear on what works: strong social support, especially from coworkers and leadership, is one of the most consistent protective factors against PTSD and burnout. Peer support programs, resilience training, and simply not facing recovery alone all show measurable benefit.

That's the gap Honored 25 exists to help close. Our mental health and wellness programs are built around connecting first responders and their families to the kind of support the research says actually works, before a crisis, not just after one.
